This beautiful Sanskrit hymn is known as the Daridraya Dahana Shiva Stotram, composed by Maharishi Vashistha. Its title literally translates to "The Hymn to Shiva who Burns Away Poverty."
The refrain at the end of every verse, Daridrya-duhkha-dahanaya namah Shivaya, means: "Salutations to Lord Shiva, who burns away the grief of poverty."
विश्वेश्वराय नरकार्णवतारणाय कर्णामृताय शशिशेखरधारणाय ।
कर्पूरकान्तिधवलाय जटाधराय दारिद्र्यदुःखदहनाय नमः शिवाय ॥ १॥
The Lord of the Universe
Salutations to Shiva, the Lord of the Universe, who rescues us from the ocean of hell. He is nectar to the ears, wears the moon as his crest, and is as white as the glow of camphor. He wears matted hair and burns away the grief of poverty.
गौरीप्रियाय रजनीशकलाधराय कालान्तकाय भुजगाधिपकङ्कणाय ।
गङ्गाधराय गजराजविमर्दनाय दारिद्र्यदुःखदहनाय नमः शिवाय ॥ २॥
The Beloved of Gauri
Salutations to Shiva, the beloved of Gauri (Parvati), who wears a crescent moon and is the ender of Time (death) itself. He wears the king of serpents as a bracelet, carries the River Ganga in his hair, and overcame the demon in elephant form.
भक्तिप्रियाय भवरोगभयापहाय उग्राय दुर्गभवसागरतारणाय ।
ज्योतिर्मयाय गुणनामसुनृत्यकाय दारिद्र्यदुःखदहनाय नमः शिवाय ॥ ३॥
The Healer of Earthly Fears
Salutations to Shiva, who loves devotion and removes the fear of the disease of worldly existence. He is fierce, yet he helps us cross the difficult ocean of life. He is filled with light, and his names and attributes are celebrated in divine dance.
चर्मम्बराय शवभस्मविलेपनाय भालेक्षणाय मणिकुण्डलमण्डिताय ।
मञ्जीरपादयुगलाय जटाधराय दारिद्र्यदुःखदहनाय नमः शिवाय ॥ ४॥
The Ascetic Lord
Salutations to Shiva, who is clothed in tiger skin and smeared with sacred ash. He has an eye on his forehead (the third eye) and is adorned with jeweled earrings. His feet are graced with anklets, and he wears matted hair.
पञ्चाननाय फणिराजविभूषणाय हेमांशुकाय भुवनत्रयमण्डिताय ।
आनन्दभूमिवरदाय तमोमयाय दारिद्र्यदुःखदहनाय नमः शिवाय ॥ ५॥
The Five-Faced Lord
Salutations to Shiva, who has five faces and is adorned by the king of cobras. He wears golden-hued garments and embellishes the three worlds. He is the bestower of the land of bliss and the master of the dark forces.
भानुप्रियाय भवसागरतारणाय कालान्तकाय कमलासनपूजिताय ।
नेत्रत्रयाय शुभलक्षणलक्षिताय दारिद्र्यदुःखदहनाय नमः शिवाय ॥ ६॥
The Worshipped One
Salutations to Shiva, who is dear to the Sun and helps cross the ocean of birth and death. He is the destroyer of death and is worshipped by Brahma (who sits on a lotus). He has three eyes and is marked by all auspicious signs.
रामप्रियाय रघुनाथवरप्रदाय नागप्रियाय नरकार्णवतारणाय ।
पुण्येषु पुण्यभरिताय सुरार्चिताय दारिद्र्यदुःखदहनाय नमः शिवाय ॥ ७॥
The Friend of Rama
Salutations to Shiva, who is dear to Lord Rama and the bestower of boons to the King of the Raghus. He loves serpents and saves humans from the depths of hell. He is the merit within all meritorious deeds and is worshipped by the Devas.
मुक्तेश्वराय फलदाय गणेश्वराय गीतप्रियाय वृषभेश्वरवाहनाय ।
मातङ्गचर्मवसनाय महेश्वराय दारिद्र्यदुःखदहनाय नमः शिवाय ॥ ८॥
The Lord of Ganas
Salutations to Shiva, the Lord of Liberation and the Giver of Fruits (results). He is the Lord of the Ganas, a lover of music, and rides the bull Nandi. He wears the skin of an elephant and is the Great Lord (Maheshwara).
